I was out to purchase recharge cards last night only to hear very tiny weeny children, gathered near where I stood, talking about Big Brother Africa. The oldest amongst these kids would be 13yrs old, coz I know one of them who said he is in Jss2. Long story cut short, these kids were discussing who the next person to be evicted should be; what happened during which episode, who the love team of who and who should be; who was bathing where and the lewd-pictures they saw on the internet.
I have never watched an episode of any BBA. Why? coz all that I’ve heard about it till-date doesn’t agree with the moral values I grew up with and wish to keep. Unfortunately, this all-ver-the-world Big Brother doesn’t promote any kind of moral value.
Some of us grew up around Sesame street, Night Rider, Superman, Batman, Discovery channel, Great heroes of the Bible, Jesus of Nazareth, Nature and the Wild, under the deep blue sea etc….. and a host of what I call "educative TV" – for academic purposes, and yet the world is not a better place. As a child, I didn’t appreciate(but never voiced it out) all the TV-related-controls my parents tried to enforce, but now I do. I raise my hat to them for a job well done. Now, I have realized that all that is called good is not really good.
Now that we are grown, the economy is still harsh and jobs are scarce in the market; people are still vile and evil, moral standards have fallen, vices are now on public display; relationship breakups and divorce are the new norm; abortions, unwanted pregancies and childbirths are all over town; child abuse and parental violence are always the latest news.
So I ask, what will happen to the futures of these kids growing up with Big Brother(Africa) and a host of un-educative TV? movies that can be summarized as human to human violence; never ending telenovelas hovering on plots such as fornication and adultery, anger, malice and hate; extra-marital affairs, broken-relationships and broken-homes; alternate-lifestyles and a host of totally weird stuff? music-lyrics that promote indecency with the opposite sex, craziness and an abuse of personal liberty, lust after money, theft, murder and insanity. The minds of these kids are already polluted and they arent adults yet – how sad.
Unfortunately, the world is more religious presently than it was 20-30years ago. Unfortunately, you dont need a TV nowadays to watch TV anymore. Every kind of audio and video, good and bad is now available on a host of mobile-devices, and you don’t need to be an adult or a millionaire to purchase one.
