Introduction: Our study last week talked about Love: God is love and love is of God, but not all kinds of love are of God. Any love that “fulfils” the works of the flesh(Gal 5: 19-21) is not of God.
Our lesson this evening is laden with meaning, for example:
Love not the world – a command: as good as an 11th commandment from God the father: don’t consider it, don’t think about it; the world is not an option, let it not happen that you would be found loving the world. Don’t give it a chance, fight against it, run from it if you have to (ex: Joseph & Potiphar’s wife). Love not the world.
Love not the world – a warning against backsliders/ing: Many have gone before us(in Bible days and in contemporary times). We have the stories of their lives to guide / warn us. Many had better opportunities(ex: Judas) than we have, and yet they made a wreck of their lives; they loved the world, they killed themselves in the physical and the spiritual. Others who once loved the world turned around and made a miracle of the rest of their(Saul / Paul) lives. The rich man in hell(ex: Lazarus) is still calling out: Love not the world.
Love not the world – a plea: God is at the door of your heart pleading: “Love me, Love not the world, I sent my son to the cross for your sake, you do not have to die anymore.” Look away from the pleasures of sin. They are but for a while. Think towards eternity.
Love not the world – a charge to be faithful: a supreme love for God is the first sign-post a faithful Christian.
Question#1: what is the world? who is the world? where is the world?
God created the world: Gen 1-2 tells us that God created the heaven and the earth by the word of His mouth: “Let there be”. Before then, the earth was without form and void, and after God finished His work (Gen 1:31), behold “it was very good”. God then “created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” Gen 1: 27. A man alone in the garden wasn’t good enough in Gods opinion, so God made a woman. The rest is history.
a) God created the physical world: Gen 1-2. His work was good. It is not a sin to love every work of God; God loves His own work. We should rather thank God for His good works: the sun by day, the moon by night, the natural but indispensable things that make life possible.
Psa 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
Psa 24:1 The earth is the LORD’S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Psa 89:11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.
b) Men, women, boy, girls; every human being in the world are part of this world: God loves us, calls us all His children. We are equal in His sight, therefore, we are all brothers and sisters, and must manifest love to each other. Regardless of color, race, religion, social status, we cannot please God if we don’t love one-another.
John 3: 16 God loved this world of men that he sent his only begotten son
John 15: 9 Jesus loves us, and tells us to abide in His love.
John13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
c) Man’s own creations: Man, created in God’s image has the ability to create (invent) things for himself, for his own comfort or destruction. The fallen man by nature wants to be without God. Overtime, man has created for himself A WORLD OF SIN, misusing every talent God gave him: language(audible/inaudible); music/noise; principles, ideas, ideals; actions/inactions; motives, goals, objectives; trends, fashion, attitudes, lifestyle; objects(in/animate); technology-invention of evil things; drugs, vices; etc., all of which summarily say no to God – in order to draw other men (relatives, friends, strangers, his immediate community) to himself (rather than to God), and into a mental state that screams “don’t believe in God”. The summary of Man’s world is SIN. Rom 1: 28-32.
1) What is in man’s World of Sin:
Man’s world is summarized in our text: for all that is in the world: the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life…
- The lust of the flesh: James 1: 13-15, Gal 5: 19: sexual and social lusts – young men and women prone.
- The lust of the eyes: Col 3: 5-7, Eph 5: 5-7: lust after material things, a craving to have all that your eyes can see which isn’t yours, which
you didn’t work for. Starting with a just a little covetousness, and then jealousy, then envy, then hatred, then murder…….middle aged prone.
Mat 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! You cannot be truly looking at Jesus and be looking at the world. If you are really looking upwards, can you see who/what is at your feet?
- The Pride of Life: I Cor 1:26-31, v29: my (plus) achievement, wealth, position, power, age, family, generations, travel, name, etc.
Prov 6:16-19 – Pride is the first of 6-things God hates; Psalm 10:4 Pride = wickedness; 1-Tim 6: 17, Ezek 16: 49-50, Prov 8:13 – the fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride…..old age prone.
2) Who is in the world of sin?
- You and I, children of God are still tenants in this physical world. John 1: 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Joh 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
- You “become” the world when you submit the members of your body, your mind and spirit to be influenced by man’s world of sin.
Rom 6: 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
- Everybody around you (friends, family relatives and strangers) who promote the world in their lifes and living, by their words, actions,
choices in life. People who would rather remind you of (Mark 4:19) “the cares of this world, riches, and the lusts of other things that would eventually choke the word of God in your life, to become unfruitful. Matt 18: 8-9, Mark 9: 43, Mat 5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
3) Where is man’s world of sin?
- The world is all around us – where we live, where we work, on the street, in the market, at home and abroad. We see it, we hear from it /
about it, we talk about it everyday.
- The world is inside some people’s pockets, diaries, bags, computers, cars, houses, bank’s, family, etc.,
- Unfortunately, the world is in so many hearts and minds. Lot’s wife physically came out of the world of Sodom, but her heart was still
there. Judas was physically with Christ, but his heart was with silver and gold. Daniel was in Babylon, but his heart was with His God. The world is still found in the dreams and ungodly ambitions, silent wishes, motives and goals of a lot of believers. But God still says: Love not the world.
Matt 4: 8-9 (Christ’s temptation), John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. One reason satan could not overcome Jesus is because Jesus was only interested in The Fathers glory.
Question: where is the world in you?
3) Why shouldn’t we love the world?
- We cannot love the Father if we love the world. Rom 5:8, Mat 6:24. Loving the Father means keeping all of His commandments:
1-John 5: 3, John 14:15, 15: 10. James 4:4-5: Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
- We cannot keep Gods commandments if we love the world: If you can’t love the father, you can’t keep his commandments (a) the rich man
did not love the Father, that’s why Lazarus died under his table, (b) You cannot inherit eternal life without Loving the father: Luke 10: 25-29, 30-37. Between the Priest, Levite and the good Samaritan, who really loved the father? (c) Phil 2:3-5 the pride of life promotes vain-glory and prevents having the mind of Christ, (d) Mark 7: 21-23 – sins from within, committed against the world of people whom God says we should love.
- The world is passing away: 1John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for
ever. James 4: 13-14, 2-Peter 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness
Satan will never stop suggesting(temptation) the world to you, but he cannot force it on you: Luke 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. Satan made man to disobey God’s commandment with 3-simple words “Hath God said”.
The world is everything, every-he, every-she, and every environment around you that will make you doubt whatever God hath said and bring you into the sin of disobedience.
The world has a different view of who you are and how you should live your life. It is called: culture, fashion, liberty, broad-mindedness, pleasure, eat-drink-be merry, etc. The world will upgrade its view of you every day, week / year, as time goes by. The standard of God does not change. God’s view of who you are, and who you should be are clearly stated in the Bible. Read it to know Gods mind.
Looking like, dressing like, acting like, thinking like, talking like,….”whatever we do just like the world” are not the marks of followers of Christ
- Could you really gain the whole world? Matthew 16:26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
- Where is your treasure? Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
- On graduation day, what are you expecting Jesus to say? Mat 25: 21
- Do the will of God on this earth and abide forever: Mat 7: 21
This world is not my home I’m just a passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore
Oh Lord you know I have no friend like you
If heaven’s not my home then Lord what will I do
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore
Rather than being influenced by the world: Mat 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
