A Bible Study about HONESTY

Title: HONESTY Text: Micah 7:2-6, Prov 6:16-19

Introduction: What is Honesty? What is Dishonesty? Let us compare and contrast them with the following:

HONESTY:
a) Of truth, and truth and truth; leads to more truth, sincerity, integrity
b) Answers of whole-truths, correct information, exactness,
c) Christlike and gentle in nature,
d) Flows out of a pure heart, leads to godliness,
e) Thinks “what would I do if Jesus were here”
f) God first, others next, then I;
g) Yes or No, I will or I won’t, affirm / disaffirm

DISHONESTY:
a) All lies, more lies upon lies, leads astray, to bondage to deceit / fraud,
b) Answers of convenience, half-truths, lies, intentional omissions, inaccuracy, exaggerations,
c) Devilish, subtle by nature, takes by force,
d) Stems from wickedness, breeds / breathes corruption and theft,
e) Thinks “thank God that Jesus isn’t here”;
f) Me Myself and I, Me Myself, and I,
g) Never a definite yes/no; dependent on the time of the day, the possibility for profit or loss;

1) Question: what do we learn about Honesty from the following verses: John 14: 6; 8:32,36,44; Heb 6:18;

In our text, Micah looked for a honest man in the land of the living, but could not find. Honesty preserves a society. In our society today, integrity is hard to find. Truth isn’t as common as it was before. Newspapers are full of fraud, deceit, cheating, murder…BAD NEWS everydat. Too many Christians at too many times have compromised so much that now, outright sinners confidently cry ‘we are all sinners’. If God is truth, if we are his children, then we are to be truthful in all things.

2) Question: In what way(s) do each of the verses below apply in our daily lives?
Lev 19: 36; Deut 25: 14–15; 16:18, 20; Prov 11:1; 12:22; 24:28; 2Cor 4: 2; Isaiah 61: 8; Prov 17:15; Exo 20:16; Psalm 15: 2, Rom 12:17, Jam 5:12, 2Cor 8: 21, 3-John 1:12

3) Discussion: below are some examples of honest people in the Bible. Mention other examples: dis/honest:

  • Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man……..
  • Luke 2: 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout,
  • Act 10:22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews,

4) Rewards for the Honest and Dishonest

  • Pro 3:33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
  • Pro 4:18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
  • Pro 10:6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
  • Pro_10:7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
    Pro_10:20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
  • Pro_10:31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

While God hates dishonesty, your own reputation as a dishonest person is negatively affected.

5) Live honestly, be Honest: Phil 4: 8

  • To God: in prayer, in the acknowledgment and confession of sin, faults, mistakes; in asking God for help while you genuinely try your very best;
  • Documentation – when you fill up forms: ex: age declarations, affidavits, submitting of applications, character references especially for a friend or family relative,;
  • Business: when you buy or sell; when given excess change; when you borrow something; pay-up owed money as agreed, and on time; when you narrate how much you paid for something;
  • Information: when telling a third party what a second party told you (exaggeration); rumor mongering; when someone calls you and you don’t want to speak to them at that moment; when someone else asks you to cover up for him/her(tell a lie)
  • Etc., etc.,

May the Lord continue to help us in our Christian Journey!.
